Letter from Alison J. Levin,Executive Director

Well April has finally arrived and we are putting all the finishing touches on our Pasta Party and Komen Ozark Race for the Cure! April 28th is certainly going to be a day to celebrate survivorship and remember those that we have lost. I know personally this will be a very special race for me.

Do you know why we call this a Race for the Cure? The reason is a race has a finish line and our goal is to find a cure for breast cancer and finish this disease forever! Please register online at www.komenozark.org  and help us raise awareness and funds to support our mission to end breast cancer forever!

Join us at the Pasta Party on Friday, April 27th sponsored by Washington Regional. The Party will be held at Pratt Barn in Fayetteville. Mermaids, Noodles and Olive Garden will be offering delicious dishes in keeping with our theme of
“A Tour of Italy”.

Our survivor breakfast will be a drop in breakfast this year so breast cancer survivors please join us at your leisure between 7-9 and enjoy a delicious breakfast sponsored by Golden Coral of Rogers. All survivors will receive a commemorative medal sponsored by Northwest Health System.

In this newsletter you will see how your money is invested back into our community by means of grants used to support breast health education, screening and treatment. In addition, 25% of your donation will directly support cutting edge research. Did you know that our State has received $7.1 million dollars in Komen funding research grants?

Thank you again for your support….step by step together we will win this race!!

A Survivor’s Story

KellyFoster-1.jpg

By Kelly Foster

My story begins in May of 1984.  I was 20 years old and my mother, Barbara Brown, had been diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer.  We were told that there were multiple lymph nodes involved and we were all scared.  At that time a diagnosis of cancer felt like a death sentence.  The world knew little about breast cancer and just two years before, an amazing organization had just started work to change that.   Now a household name, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was about to change the face of breast cancer forever. Against all odds, my mother fought breast cancer for 13 years and did a lot of living during that time. Over the years, she went through several rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and other difficult treatments trying to defeat the cancer before she finally lost her battle in 1997. I consider her a pioneer and a survivor.  It’s my mother and women like her that have helped us get this far in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.  I can’t help thinking that her process could have been different had her physicians known want we know now.
My mother and her story is one of the reasons why I got involved with Komen in 2000. As a nurse and a daughter of a survivor, it seemed like a natural fit. Little did I know that 10 years later I would hear those same words that my mother had heard, “you have breast cancer”. Like most women in my position I had worried at times that I too would hear those words. I’m so fortunate that I have had my yearly mammograms and access to the best care. In April of 2010 I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in situ. Although it was a sizable tumor, I was blessed that my cancer was not invasive and there were not any lymph nodes involved. In May I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and finished the reconstruction process with one more short surgery in August. After I did a six-week course of radiation, I was finished with all the surgeries and treatments by late October. Thanks to the advances in technology, the collaborative efforts of great medical personnel and the support of many, I am cancer free today. During my treatment and even now, I am amazed that I was not overwhelmed with fear at the diagnosis of cancer.  Instead I found myself overwhelmed with God’s love for me and the love and support of family, friends and others along the way.
It has been an interesting journey. In honor of my mother and other women and in support of my daughter and the generations to come, I look forward to continuing my support and advocacy for women with breast cancer and our continued fight for a cure.

2012 Susan G. Komen Ozark Race for the Cure® Volunteer Opportunities

More than twenty five years ago, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything possible to put an end to breast cancer. Today, thanks to more than 100,000 survivors and volunteers/activists, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest, most progressive grassroots organization fighting breast cancer.
Volunteers play a vital role in the Susan G. Komen Ozark Race for the Cure®.  Their passion and commitment is what makes our Race successful.  This disease has touched so many people, either through their own personal experience or that of a loved one.  Will by join our passionate fight by volunteering on Race day?
Last year, individuals from all walks of life volunteered their time and talents before, during and after the Race to ensure its success. We need leaders, thinkers, movers and shakers, educators, communicators…all types of talented people. We look forward to having you join in the Race experience with us.
Thank you to the many volunteers that helped with last year’s RACE!

All Pets Animal Hospital is Barking for a Cure

You can see it painted on their windows when you drive by.  You can hear it in their voices when you talk with the employees of the animal hospital.  And when you walk inside, you can simply feel it in the air.  It’s so powerful the cats visiting the hospital have started a petition for Meow for the Cure, the Birds are cawing for Chirp for the Cure, and the reptiles are demanding that there be a Slither for the Cure.  All kidding aside, All Pets Animal Hospital, located on North Walton Boulevard in Bentonville, is helping take Bark for a Cure to another level in 2012.

There are many ways for people to donate to the Ozark Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen foundation while visiting All Pets Animal Hospital.  For starters, anyone who makes a donation receives a pink paw cutout with their pet’s name on it that is attached to a tree in their lobby, decorated with pink balloons.  Pink Rice Krispy treats and other baked goods can be purchased for any Komen donation amount.  Beautiful handmade jewelry, made by an employee of the animal hospital, can be purchased with 50% of the sale price donated to the Komen foundation.  Throughout the month of April, $2 will be donated to Komen for the purchase of each “Pedi-Cure”, which owners purchase for their pets.

All Pets Animal Hospital is supporting Komen and Bark for the Cure in so many ways beyond their efforts at raising donations.  They have created awareness of the event by dedicating their regular booth at Bentonville’s First Friday event in April, in support of Bark for the Cure.  Also throughout April, all boarded cats and dogs receive a special pink bandana to show off to their feline and canine friends.

In addition to being a 2012 Paw sponsor, All Pets Animal Hospital will have a Veterinarian on site and have a watering station at this year’s Bark for the Cure.  We are very excited to have All Pets Animal Hospital as a Paw Sponsor and can’t say enough about how much we appreciate their support!

Promise Circle Luncheon

The Ozark Affiliate held their Promise Circle Luncheon on March 15th at Mermaid’s Restaurant.  The Promise Circle Luncheon serves as an event to publicly announce for the first time the recently awarded grantees for the upcoming grant year.  In addition to revealing the grant recipients, the top five corporate teams and top 24 fundraising individuals from the 2011 Race for the Cure were recognized as well.

This year the Ozark Affiliate had nearly 1.3 million dollars in grant requests and 18 grant applicants.  The grant application process proved what the affiliate already knew, which is that the need for Breast Health Services in the service area is increasing.  The affiliate was able to grant out $750,000 to 14 organizations in all 10 counties in the service area.

The 2012-2013 Ozark Affiliate Grant Recipients are:
