This year, I celebrated 13 years with no evidence of breast cancer in my body. Some people say that is "cancer free" but being "free" of cancer means finding a cure so that we never have to worry about the cancer spreading. As a survivor, there isn't a day that goes by that you don't worry about your cancer returning, that is normal - but we move on and live our best life.
I know that my outcome was incredible - I know a lot of other people who have not shared the same outcome. We can't slow down in our fight - we need to help make sure that there are no barriers to diagnosis and treatment - that we support families as much as we can with the financial burden of the disease - that we educate people about their risk (growing older and having breast tissue) and what action to take for their health. Finally we need to find a cure, because over 40,000 women in the United States die of breast cancer every year. That shouldn't be acceptable to any of us.
